Besides for being my favorite song on Adele’s latest album, “set fire to the rain” is a phrase I love. I chose the song to title this post because it’s sort of a double entendre. To me, these words mean that you are doing the impossible, you are making something happen that you never thought was possible. I also chose “set fire to the rain” because it’s raining today here in NYC (I know, very cliché, writing something about the rain on a rainy day).

This morning, getting out of bed was setting fire to the rain. One look out the window at the dreary gray sky was all it took to make me stay in bed a little while longer. The sheer force it took me to get ready for work could have moved an elephant. I wonder what it is about rainy days – the dark skies, the rhythm of the rain drops, or the awful premonition of being soaked – that makes people hate the rain.

Even though my morning was terrible, I decided not to let it ruin my day. Instead, I decided to use it as inspiration. I was trying to think of ways to like the rain, but that’s almost as much of a waste of time as thinking of ways to marry Ryan Reynolds. Then I realized that I don’t have to like the rain, I have to like the day and not let the rain ruin that. So I’ve compiled a list of things that still make rainy days lovely.

Puddles are not only fun to jump in, they also provide a unique way of seeing things. I love this tumblr, Architectural Puddles, devoted to images of buildings reflected through puddles.

I hate to admit it, but I was actually a little bit excited for the rain and there’s only one reason: Hunters. I got a pair of Hunter rain boots for Christmas and I’ve been dying to wear them. Find yourself a pair of rain boots that you love. There are so many different brands (you can get designer wellies or ones from Target), colors, and designs out there that everyone can find a pair they truly love. When you hear the pitter-patter of the rain, just think of how much you love your rain boots and you’ll instantly be happier.

I love the smell of the rain. Right before rain comes, there is this fresh, clean smell that takes the air. It’s really something special because you have to be in the right place at the right time to get the scent. For example, it doesn’t really smell the same in the city because there are too many other delicious and repulsive things to smell (usually at the same time). But in the suburbs or countryside, go outside at the beginning of the storm, and I guarantee that you’ll be able to smell the rain.

For some strange reason, I am usually more creative on rainy days. My thoughts run constantly, changing and weaving through each other until suddenly I have a new idea for a blog or ways to arrange my clothes into a cool outfit or something to put on my bucket list. It’s like my brain knows that the day is going to suck, so it decides to make me a little happier by providing me with good ideas. On the next rainy day, just listen to the rain fall and let your thoughts run wild. See if you come up with anything new.

One thing I love is getting out of the rain. Walking into your home after being in the rain makes you appreciate its warmth. The best part, though, is getting into some comfortable pajamas, getting into bed, and watching a movie or reading a book… Which is exactly what I’m going to do when I get home.

Another thing to love about rainy days: knowing they won’t last forever. Eventually the clouds will part and the sun will be back again.

We were blown away by Mary Katrantzou’s Spring 2011 Collection. Her dresses make it appear as if you are wearing a mural! They really are like nothing we have ever seen before! The colors are vibrant and the various styles and fits are plentiful. Many of the digital print designs on the dresses look like the interiors of exquisite homes and hotels. You really have to see it for yourself to appreciate the uniqueness of Mary Katrontzou. All the dresses are printed with images of lavish hotel and stateroom interiors—and embellished with interior-decorator braid, tassels, and fringe trimmings. She’d digitalized photos from vintage copies of Architectural Digest and The World of Interiors while enhancing the color and taking advantage of the intricacies of home furnishings. Her dresses in the Spring 2011 collection are a bit pricey ($900+) but they are certainly beautiful to look at!

Due to the popularity of the award-winning film, “Black Swan,” ballerinas have been showing up everywhere! The sexy ballerina is on the runaway and on the high street in stores such as Top Shop and ASOS. Ballet pumps and hair buns are making a huge comeback! The innocent ballerina is out, and the sexy, upgraded dancer is in! Trade in your pink leotard for black lace or leather. Designers such as Chloe, Marchesa and Richard Nicholl have embraced the new ballerina style in their 2011 collections. The long flowing skirts made from the sheerest of chiffons and the tight pink leotards which hug our figures beautifully without clutching any of the wrong areas definitely make the cut. But since the release of “Black Swan” the ballerina trend has taken a new turn and now exudes a sexy, raw, and stylish energy. Ballerinas are here to stay!

To celebrate the bittersweetness of the ending of fashion week, Elle magazine recognizes the year round inhabitants of Lincoln Center; the dancers of the New York City Ballet. Benjamin Millipied (better known as Mr. Natalie Portman and father-to-be) and Jeniffer Ringer a fellow NYCB principal, grace the pages in designers such as Fendi and Derek Lam and take us back to the very chic 70′s and find inspiration from the retro fashions. We’re sure inspired.

Diane von Furstenberg gives away her 4 best fashion tips. The first tips to balance prints with solids, for example you can mix any solid with a printed bag, and vice versa. Her second tip is to be catty. She says that nothing is more flattering or as feminim as leopard print. Diane’s third tip is to get moving, she says the print on your dress moves when you try it on and looks different from when it’s hanging on a hanger. Moving can make you look either bigger or smaller. Her fourth and final tip is to combine similare-color patterns. An easy way to do that is to put on several pieces from one collection. DVF says “Right now everything is black and white and cobalt blue, so the colors harmonize.”

The whole world has been ranting and raving over the royal engagement of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Replicas of Middleton’s engagement ring have been sweeping the globe! A dress she wore in November to match her gigantic and gorgeous sapphire engagement ring has sold out in stores all over the world. “Waity Katie” has become a fashion icon for women all over the world. It seems as if anything she wears becomes the next “It Outfit.” The gown she chooses to wear at her April wedding will surely be replicated by designers and in high demand in all countries! Her refined yet classy look is how young girls aspire to dress. The big gowns and tiaras are clearly out of style! We look forward to more of Kate Middleton’s clothes and accessories in the future!

From Kanye West’s riveting performance on SNL surrounded by a bevy of ballet beauties, to Lanvin for H&M’s tutu dresses, to Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Wynona Ryder in The Black Swan, ballerinas are the height of fashion.  Hair buns, tutus, leggings, stirrup pants, ballet slippers and demure camisoles are all over the place, from the mean streets of the Upper Eastside to the gritty streets of Williamsburg.  There is something quite captivating about the chic, feminine, demure style of ballerinas that has taken the fashion world by storm.

Did you guys see this week’s epi of The City? So much drama, and, as always, Olivia Palermo was stirring up trouble! Olivia didn’t wear anything by GUESS at a GUESS [by Marciano] party, which is a major no-no; we’ve found a few things that she could have worn to support the brand and still have looked every bit the fashionista she is.

This dress was the dress Olivia suggested to Erin Kaplan during the episode. She called it “chunky” but we call it sexy (especially in the other gorgeous pink color)!

This dress reminds us of Kim Cattrall’s dress at the Sex and the City 2 Premiere. The color would definitely work with the tan that I’m sure so many of you lovely ladies are going to get this summer and can be jazzed up with a brightly colored clutch.

Finally, nothing is better than a LBD for a stylish girl like Olivia (and the Haute PR Fashion Femmes, of course!). You can add all sorts of accessories to make your look unique; we’d add some pink and sparkly jewelry to stand out from the crowd at our NYC Fashion PR parties.

Are you more of a Miranda than a Carrie? Then we will totes hook you up with the scoop on how to get Cynthia Nixon’s red carpet look from the “Sex and the City 2” premiere. It’s easy: take any black strapless dress and add a brooch at the bust. Although Nixon was not wearing a brooch at the premiere, as the feather-like ornament was actually just part of her dress, we can pull the look off with a brooch without having to find a dress that has that embellishment attached already.  This is a great way to keep your party style fresh, since you can wear a basic dress zillions of different ways by adding different brooches!

If you want to use a brooch just like the one in the photograph, you can get this look for less from Amazon. It’s cubic zirconia, feather shaped, and the best part: only $58.00.  You can also choose a brooch that isn’t exactly like Nixon’s to make your own glam statement.

Swarovski also makes fabulous brooches, with prices ranging from $60 to $200, making it a solid source of this accessory. There are many options available, many of which were outlined here on another blog. Of course, if you’re on a tight budget, you could always get an inexpensive dress to lower the costs involved; as long as you get the right brooch, you can make any plain dress come to life!

The key is to make sure the dress is basic; if you look at Cynthia Nixon’s photo from the Sex and the City 2 premiere , you’ll notice her dress is very simple—no ruffles, no complicating stitching, nor lace.  We’ve found a great dress that meets these qualifications at Express, shown below and for only $44.50!

The total look would be $102.50, which is quite a steal to get a red-carpet ready look. Plus, you can wear brooches with so much that you can use your brooch many times to turn basic outfits that you own into classy, sophisticated looks!

Did you gush over the neon yellow dress that Sarah Jessica Parker wore to the premiere of the movie “Sex and the City 2″ as much as we did?  Now, you can get her look for $58.00!

Victoria’s Secret One-shoulder Bra Top dress

The key to her dress was the unique way in which her dress was cut around the shoulders and the bust, and this Victoria’s Secret dress has a similar shape.  It’s fun, flirty, and sexy all at the same time, just like Carrie Bradshaw!  Just like Parker did for her red carpet look, choose a pair of shoes that is a different color from the dress—Parker wore dark grey, almost black shoes.  The Haute PR Fashion Femmes recommend some oh-so-trendy beige heels to go with the dress shown. However, the dress comes in many other colors to express your inner Carrie, like bright cobalt, fiesta red, and solid black.
